Adding custom tile layers as base maps in ArcGIS Online

In certain instances, the user may want to display a custom map as the base map for a web map instead of the generic ones available on the web mapping application. This post will demonstrate how to add a custom map or Tile layer as a base map in ArcGIS Online.

Things to note.
- Tile layers or maps are raster layers or maps configured or rendered in such a manner that enables them to be viewed on the web.
- Tile layers are always hosted on a server capable of rendering data as maps and images.

Task
To Add a Tile Layer to an ArcGIS Online using it as the base map for a map.

Procedure
Sign into ArcGIS Online account. Go to MAP to open a new map.



Go to Add > Add Layer from Web. * Tile layers must be hosted on a map server



In the pop up window, go to the drop down list and select A Tile Layer.



Input the URL of the hosted Tile layer and check the option Use as Basemap. Give the layer a title, credits and also SET TILE COVERAGE. Then Click ADD LAYER



The layer, Dam Map, is added as the base map and the layer comes in as several tiles beside each other (Red box, yellow box).



Use the Zoom in/Zoom out buttons (+ and – in red box) to adjust until the zoom creates just one layer.


Go to the Save icon > Save As to save the map.


Save Map. Fill in the details in the window.


The map is now saved using a custom tile layer as the base map.
