Summarize Point data using Aggregate Points in Polygon in ArcGIS Online

This post will demonstrate how to use our web based GIS application software-ArcGIS Online to summarize Point data as well as visualizing the aggregate points in each polygon feature on a map.

For sample data to practice, Click this link to download this zipped shapefiles: GrazingSpots.ZIP, West Africa.ZIP
(Kindly attribute this data to www.mapsnigeriainitiative.wordpress.com)

Sign into ArcGIS Online account (You must be subscribing to an organizational account to be able to perform analysis in ArcGIS Online). Click on Map to open a new map.
Capture-1

Let us look at our data in the Contents window. We have a Point feature layer- Grazingspots-which represent major grazing spots within the geographical extent. Below is a polygon map comprising the different countries that make up the West African sub-region.
Our task is to summarize the number of points per polygon and visualize this result on the map using ArcGIS Online.
Capture-2

Click on Analysis (red box 1). The Perform Analysis window will open, then click on Summarize Data (red box 2) and under it click on Aggregate Points (red box 3).
Capture-3

In Option 2, we select the polygon layer as that is the layer containing the countries. Option3- Add statistics and its an optional field. For the demo, the dataset contains information on the numerical sizes of the livestock at the mapped grazing spots. Headcount represents the numerical size in the wet months and Drycount in the dry months when migration to the south takes place. Click RUN ANALYSIS
Capture-4

The new layer-Summarize (red boxed) is added. The different circles represent the total number of points per polygon -the bigger the circle translates to a greater number of Points in Polygon. To create the visualization, Click on the ….. beside the layer and choose Create Labels.
Capture-7

The Label Features window will open. Select the appropriate attribute field for labeling the features. The Label size, color and font attributes can be edited. Click OK
Capture-8

The Cluster markers are now labelled and displayed on the map in the screenshot below.

Adding custom tile layers as base maps in ArcGIS Online

CLICK ON THIS LINK TO WATCH THE YOUTUBE VIDEO DEMO OF THIS POST

In certain instances, the user may want to display a custom map as the base map for a web map instead of the generic ones available on the web mapping application. This post will demonstrate how to add a custom map or Tile layer as a base map in ArcGIS Online.

Things to note.
- Tile layers or maps are raster layers or maps configured or rendered in such a manner that enables them to be viewed on the web.
- Tile layers are always hosted on a server capable of rendering data as maps and images.

Task
To Add a Tile Layer to an ArcGIS Online using it as the base map for a map.

Procedure
Sign into ArcGIS Online account. Go to MAP to open a new map.
Capture-1

Go to Add > Add Layer from Web. * Tile layers must be hosted on a map server
Capture-2

In the pop up window, go to the drop down list and select A Tile Layer.
Capture-3

Input the URL of the hosted Tile layer and check the option Use as Basemap. Give the layer a title, credits and also SET TILE COVERAGE. Then Click ADD LAYER
Capture-4

The layer, Dam Map, is added as the base map and the layer comes in as several tiles beside each other (Red box, yellow box).
Capture-6

Use the Zoom in/Zoom out buttons (+ and – in red box) to adjust until the zoom creates just one layer.
Capture-7

Go to the Save icon > Save As to save the map.
Capture-8

Save Map. Fill in the details in the window.
Capture-9

The map is now saved using a custom tile layer as the base map.

Creating and Publishing a Simple web map using ArcGIS online

Watch the YouTube Video demo of this topic

Steps
- We will download our data from a GPS receiver as Tracks
- Import the Tracks as GPX file into ArcGIS Online.
- Design the Web map.
- Share the web Map.
-Embed the web map in a web page.

Procedure

1. Connect the GPS receiver via USB port. Launch DNR GPS and make sure it connects to the GPS. Go to GPS > Download All. We will be working with the Tracks downloaded from the GPS receiver( red box). Go to File>Save To>File and save the Tracks as field work.gpx.
image

2. Launch ArcGIS Online and sign in. In the home page, click on MAP (red boxed).
image

3. When the map page opens, Go to Add > Add Layer from File.
image

4. This dialog box will come. Click browse to navigate to where the gpx file is. Then when the file is uploaded, click IMPORT LAYER.
image

5. The file field work.gpx is imported in as three polygons almost on top of each other. Notice the Change Style window is opened immediately so the Symbol Style can be edited.
image

6. Here we choose the single symbol using the ident as the attribute to show. Our tracks are T1, T15 and T3 as in the GPS where the data was downloaded from.
image

7. The pop up window that displays information on the feature can be re-configured. Click on the button to the right of the feature > Configure Pop –up
image

8. The fields that contain info we don’t require the audience to see can be unchecked. Once unchecked in this Configure Attributes window, it won’t appear on the pop window display.
image

9.In this window, we will also add an image to the pop-up window display. Since we grouped all our polygons into a single symbol, all the pop windows will share the same pix. Click on Add>Image.
image

10. A configure image dialog box allows us to fill the details. Note that the image must be hosted online and the url of the image should be supplied as below.
image

11. Click on the feature and the pop up window should reflect the saved changes.
image

12. The next thing is to save the map. Click on Save on the main menu. The Save Map window will pop out. Fill in the details and click SAVE MAP.
image

13. Next we publish the web map we just created. Click on Share on the main menu. The Share dialog window opens up. Check everyone (public) in red box and a link to the map will appear in the window (green box). Click on the EMBED IN WEBSITE
image

14. The Embed in Website window will come up. The HTML code will appear in the open window (red box). Right click on it and Copy.
image

15. Insert the HTML code into the source code of the web page. See the HTML code in blue highlight.
image

16.Launch the web page and the web map will come up. See the url of the web page in the browser (red boxed). The web map is dynamic and interactive.
