This post will demonstrate how to use the MAPC2MAPC software- (download the unregistered free version off the web and practice) to convert a KMZ image calibrated in google earth to a GeoTIFF Image for use in QGIS or any other GIS software.
Calibrated images are scanned images that have geographic reference to a location on the earth surface- more or less like saying georeferenced.
We are in no way advertising MAPC2MAPC software!!!!!!!
To convert our calibrated image – ExpertGPS.Kmz- (Search for details in our previous posting- Adding Scanned maps to a GPS receiver using google earth..) to a GeoTiff format.
Steps
The demo will show the third step highlighted in brown.
- Download and install MAPC2MAPC software from the web to your pc or laptop.
- Calibrate a scanned image using google earth - (Search for details in our previous posting- Adding Scanned maps to a GPS receiver using Google earth..)
- Convert the KMZ file to a GeoTIFF and load the image into QGIS.
Procedure
Launch MAPC2MAPC and Go to File
Click Load Calibrated Map to load in the KMZ file – ExpertGPS.KMZ
In the Open Calibration window. select ExpertGPS Map.Kmz and click open.
The KMZ fileis loaded into MAPC2MAPC.
Go to File > Write GEOTIFF
See the blue highlighted comment Done GEOTIFF to indicate the KMZ file has been written to GEOTIFF format. Use windows explorer to locate the GEOTIFF File.
Launch QGIS and click on the Add Raster Layer icon. In the Add Raster Layer window, navigate to where the GEOTIFF file is and Add.
The GEOTIFF image is loaded into QGIS already calibrated.
